Mailbox 5
During World War II, two Nazi police officers – Hans and Ulrich – raid a stash of artifacts stolen by Hitler’s SS. Among the loot, the officers find the Wandering Crescent Collection, a horde of gold coins from the 14th century, worth a fortune. The officers steal the coins and go on the run, planning to catch a boat to Tierra del Fuego – the southernmost tip of South America. Ulrich gets captured and is tortured by a young Major, but doesn’t divulge the whereabouts of Hans, who managed to escape with the loot. Ulrich, unable to walk from his torture, grows old in East Germany, waiting for the opportunity to leave and join Hans in Chile. When the Berlin Wall falls, Ulrich finally thinks his opportunity has arrived. But he is kidnapped by the Major, now older and a retired Stasi officer. Ulrich tells the Major that Hans is in Tierra del Fuego but flees before divulging any more information. Ulrich manages to send off two letters before killing himself: a warning to Hans and a message to Hanseactic Lloyd’s, the insurance company looking for the coins. Juan Belmonte is a former South American guerilla fighter working as a bouncer in a seedy night club. One night after an altercation with some neo-Nazis, Belmonte is saved from going to jail by Oskar Kramer, an ex-Interpol agent turned insurance executive for Hanseatic Lloyd’s. Oskar makes Belmonte an offer he can’t refuse: either go back to his native Chile to track down Hans and find the Wandering Crescent Collection before the Major does, or be deported and unable to provide the necessary medical care for his great love, Veronica. Racing against Belmonte to find the treasure is the Major’s man: Frank Galinsky, a recently divorced, former Stasi agent, now being investigated by the newly unified German government. Galinsky is eager to recapture some of his past glory and get his life back on track, and is willing to do anything to do so. Both men fly to Chile, and the race begins... Based on the award-winning bestseller The Name of a Bullfighter by Luis Sepulveda, MAILBOX 5 is an atmospheric neo-noir game of cat-and-mouse that subtly probes exile, purpose, and failure, while delivering a riveting chase film that takes our characters from the urban decay of modern Germany to the untamed wilderness of Tierra del Fuego. In a world full of people that history has left behind, sometimes to win, you have to know how to lose. MAILBOX 5 will be a German-Chilean/Argentinian co-production with MMC Studios Koln.
